Nicole and I first crossed paths in the pre-COVID era while collaborating on an HR tech project. Little did we know that this chance encounter would blossom into a perfect match made in #remotework heaven. As we began working together, our professional relationship deepened, and we got to know each other’s strengths and passions.
Now, fast forward about five years, and here we are—frequent collaborators who pull each other in on various projects as fractional professionals. We are ardent advocates of the entrepreneurial spirit, believing in the mantra of doing what you love. And what’s even better is that we are doing it together!
As consultants, we’ve had the privilege of helping numerous visionary clients refine and bring their ideas to life. During the seemingly endless COVID times, we engaged in countless discussions about our work and aspirations for the future. It was during one of these inspiring conversations that an exciting idea struck us—why not apply our expertise to build something of our own as well?
The concept of founding a digital marketing agency was born, fueled by our shared passion for humanizing the digital landscape and forging genuine connections between brands and their audiences. This revelation, combined with our deep experience in executing creative visions, led to HFD.
Building our company has been an incredible journey, shaped by the culmination of all our prior experiences. Recently, I delved into the book “The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution,” which provided a captivating insight into the origins of Silicon Valley’s unique work culture and how it contrasted with the traditional East Coast business culture.
Silicon Valley, at one end of the spectrum, embraced a culture of casual Fridays every day, encouraging innovation and the free flow of ideas, while adopting a flattened corporate structure. On the opposite end, East Coast companies adhered to formal corporate attire and rigid hierarchies. As described by Issacson, Silicon Valley birthed a corporate culture that stood in stark contrast to the hierarchical organization of East Coast firms.
Drawing from my personal experiences working in both traditional East Coast structures and innovative West Coast startups, I’ve come to realize that each approach has its merits. It’s not a zero-sum game; there are pros and pitfalls to both. With this understanding, I am convinced that with our combined experiences, Nicole and I can leverage the best practices and lessons we’ve learned from our diverse work experiences, spanning across different industries such as trans-American, international, corporate, non-profit, and startup ventures, to create a truly bespoke business.
As we embarked on this entrepreneurial endeavor, we faced the challenges that come with creating something for ourselves, despite being skilled at doing it for others. We’ve predominantly acted as serial “outside looking in,” third-party integrators, bringing visions to life for various clients. But now, we are thrilled to share our vision with you and support your success in the digital world.
